2022 Case Competition

Financing Solutions to Energy Poverty in Colombia, Ghana and Myanmar

The 2022 Case Competition was brought to you by Switch Energy Alliance with additional support from SEMPRA and the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum & Geosystems Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

The 2022 Case Competition was brought to you by Switch Energy Alliance with additional support from SEMPRA and the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum & Geosystems Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

The 2022 Case Competition included the participation of more than 460 university students from 15 countries, all competing for a total prize package again worth $25,000, with the winning team alone taking home $10,000. One hundred and sixteen energy professionals from around the world generously volunteered their time as mentors and judges.

Similar to previous competitions, energy poverty was the focus of the competition this year, again with the caveat to incorporate financial constraints in developing solutions to energy poverty. Students in this year's Case Competition had to work within a maximum budget for each country based on that country's GDP and existing energy budget but could also include external sources of funding, specifying where such funding would come from, how it would be used, and it is dispersed over the 30 year timeframe of the project.

The 2022 Case Competition problem (aka the prompt) focused on three countries: Colombia, Ghana and Myanmar. Teams chose one of the three countries, thoroughly researching the existing energy landscape and the challenges of how to incorporate new technologies and improve the energy infrastructure. Teams also had to take into account societal, economic and environmental impacts from their plans. The 10-minute video and PDF presentations created by the teams reflected deep thought, extensive research and creative solutions. See the Finalists' presentations below.
